IN THE NEGATIVE

For this project, I'm looking into how negative space may be used in movie posters for various film genres, including award-winning, book adaptations, and animation. This project challenges my understanding of Gestalt concepts, specifically how they influence the development of meaning in design using negative space.

Inspiration and Insight

Hidden Figures

In the Movie, Hidden Figures There are three main characters, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughen, and Mary Jackson. These three characters work at NASA, in an era of racism and sexism. They faced the daily challenge of being looked down upon by their higher-ups, being discriminated against, because they are African American, and their skills being put down by others.

Everything everywhere all at Once

In this Movie, the main protagonist Evelyn Wang is a Middle Aged Chinese immigrant who owns a laundry mat with her husband Waymond and has one daughter named Joy, and her judgmental father that lives with them. Her marriage with her husband Waymond is crumbling and falling to pieces and has a hard relationship with her daughter. Evelyn had a falling out with her daughter the day before they had to go to a tax audit,(Joy was their translator) that could make or break their laundry mat. The day of the audit came and Evelyn’s husband changed into a person whom she did not recognize, telling her that she is the last hope for the multi-verse, against the villain Stephanie Hsu's Jobu Tupaki. Evelyn has to learn how to get skills from other universes to fight the enemies that she encounters on her path to defeating the villain who turns out to be her daughter who is from another universe and can travel the multiverse with no external help from devices.

Soul

In the movie Soul, the main character Joe, is a pianist musician who was born to play the piano, is a middle-aged man who is stuck teaching 12-year-olds music at a school in New York. He finally gets the part that he wants, and after being excited about the part, he gets into an accident and finds himself in the afterlife. He is one determined man, and at 22, he tries to go back to life, but there is a lot of twists and turns in the story.
